Why do Dogs Chew Bones?


It’s always been natural for canines (that’s what I am) out in the wild to catch and chew their prey.  So we just like to chew bones because they taste yummy to us, it’s stimulating to our mind, and we get a whole lot of jaw exercise.  It’s relaxing.

Here I'm eating a marrow bone.  See how the inside of the circle is soft?  That's where the good stuff is for dogs.  Parents should be careful which bones they give us and throw away any parts that are small enough to swallow.  Also, they shouldn’t be cooked bones because that could give my mouth slivers.

So, you ask, "Why do dogs chew bones?"  Well, why do people play solitaire?   :)

    You're right! People aren't meant to chew bones. We have different kinds of teeth than dogs do. Humans do like to chew the meat off around bones sometimes.
    Eloise, you're right, we shouldn't eat anything that is too hot. When Diego gets his food cooked, we let it cool a bit so he won't burn his mouth.
